The Amsterdam Marathon – October 2016

Finally, I have found a bit of free time to tell you how I got on with my fifth marathon in the quirky city of Amsterdam! This time last week I was huffing and puffing my way through the 26.2 mile race, with a personal ambition of running under 4 hours and raising as much as I can for the charity Mind, which supports sufferers of mental illnesses.

Sooooo, how did you do?

Well, after all the training I put in (some 350 miles in total over 6 months), I managed to push myself to a new personal best. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite surpass the 4 hour mark but I’m happy with my efforts of 4 hours 15 minutes and 51 seconds 🙂

There were quite a few emotions going through me as I was slowly grinding to a halt after about 20 miles. Mainly fatigue leading to a disheartened feeling when the sub-4 hour target slipped through my grasp as I couldn’t have given any more. However, the support from the people of Amsterdam as they cheered from the sides of the race course was incredible so thanks to those who created an amazing atmosphere for us runners!

A special thanks to one of the volunteers who was dressed in a big cuddly bear costume. She saw me struggling at around the 24 mile mark, gave me a hug and shouted some encouraging words at me which boosted me to the finish line. I bet not many people can say they got a bear hug in Amsterdam 😛

Will you do another one?

I was pretty adamant that this would be my last one. I’ve run 5 marathons now and they are a tough ask, they certainly are not getting any easier! I would only do one more IF, and it’s a big IF, I can get in to the London marathon through the ballot system. Otherwise, I will stick to scenic half marathons around the UK & World to keep my fitness going. It would be a shame to lose all the fitness I have gained over the last few months so I will be looking to continue it by joining a running club and meeting new people. Sounds like fun to me 😉

How much did you raise in the end?

To my astonishment, there are still donations coming in and I want to say another huge thanks to all of those who have sponsored me. The initial target of £430 has been smashed and the total is currently sitting at £561.40! There is still time to donate in the next couple of weeks if you wanted to (from the time of writing this article), please click here to go through to the justgiving page 🙂
