No that is not a typo, the artist’s name really is Critycal Dub and the double team with DJ Chap in their liquid drum & bass track called Sunshine is a beauty from 2012! This was released on the V Recordings label and featured on BBC Radio 1 back in 2011 on a show hosted by Grooverider although arguably, the bigger event was opening the Platform Project show in July 2018 a few years later! OK, maybe not but we can dream!
If you recognise the sample, give yourself some points as this one samples a section of the wonderful Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves the Sunshine which was released in 1976 and is an easy listening chilled out tune to bring the sunshine vibes to you. Like a lot of drum & bass tracks, samples of older tunes are a regular feature and I like to think that the genre is a great way to introduce these forgotten classics to the newer generation if they are done properly and not abused. At least that’s my opinion anyway! Here’s the original that is sampled in today’s share:
I mentioned earlier on that I opened the July 2018 Platform Project show with this one and funnily enough, I did a couple of interviews in that same show. One was with my fellow co-presenter DJ Pi to catch up with how things were going his side and then half way through, I popped down to the South West coast and interviewed R-Vee whilst we were sitting in the sunshine on the beach at St. Ives haha! Always good to play a bit of frisbee with him when I visit but definitely not taking a dip in the sea, damn, it’s like stepping into a fridge!
Speaking of nice memories, I nearly forgot that one of my favourite transitions I’ve done so far features in this show as well. Around July 2018, DaveyHub managed to get our collaboration featured on BBC Introducing called Stargazing and I was in mix heaven as I blended it in with Tell Me by Tokyo Prose – if you want to listen in to that, it starts around 22:27 in the show above. How was that nearly 3 years ago… damn, time flies when you’re buzzing around at 174 BPM, I don’t know how anyone else copes with slower BPMs haha!
Hope you enjoy the sunshine vibes today!
